The Mutual finds a sympathetic staging for an idealistic exploration of cultural commerce and non-monetary exchange within The Briggait for VAULT 2011. As a fish market the Briggait was once a trading ground in which commodities were bought and sold. Similarly invested in ideas of trade, communication and fair exchange The Mutual draws inspiration from the industrial traditions of skilled labor and Glasgow’s mercantile heritage.

In Glasgow and at The Briggait the passage of time has replaced one market and its attendant community with another. Within this new creative market we showcase a series of pamphlets by fifteen of our members; displayed and traded according to the pageantry and volume of the previous market. The members have created their works in response to the ideas and issues surrounding the venue and the event recalling the legacy of the fish market and examining notions of exchange; commodity, service or intellectual trading, monetary or otherwise.

In an alternative method of communication reminiscent of maritime signals a series of unique flags created by each artist have been turned into a new textile commission on collaboration with Bespoke Atelier.
