Prefab – Exhibition opening: Saturday 6th August 2001 5pm – 7pm

Studio 42, West Graham Street, Glasgow, G4 9LJ

Prefab is an exhibition of selected works by artists, Lesley McDermott, Angie McLaren, Carolyn Mason and Linda McLaughin. The artists have taken over the Studio 41 space to explore a range of ideas based on a female perspective of our role and experiences how they evolve with society. The works are challenging, often posing awkward questions that don’t have easy answers. In the title there is a suggestion of impermanence, of an era when things were different, certainly in terms of women's role in society, our childhood, how environment and experiences influence what we become.

Works on show include:

lesley mcdermott- the screen print series 'a woman's place' references aspects of feminist text that allude to shifts or complacencies in current attitudes to equality, the installation 'someplace new' (collaborative homage to 70's 'Womanhouse' with linda mclaughlin) comprises of digital piece 'semiotics of the home' and found object/ mixed media work

angie mclaren- handmade paper hangings trap personal items, sculptural objects, photomontage and digital presentation 'Awakenings' based on women's intimate thoughts, reflect experiences, feelings, relationships and memories

carolyn mason- mixed media pieces include a christening dress stitched meticulously from condoms and winged moth-like objects constructed using human hair, also a series of screen prints are amongst various responses to the female persona.
